Quick answer

Garage door repair in Queens NY starts at $45 for a hinge, $175 for an off-track reset and $195 for a pair of cables. If a cable has snapped or the door has come off its track, don't open it. Call (718) 673-6042, Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM.

Snapped or frayed lift cables

The two lift cables run from the bottom corners of the door up to drums on the spring bar. When one snaps, the door drops on that side and hangs crooked. Rust is the most common cause we see on the peninsula: the cable frays strand by strand near the bottom bracket, where water collects, until it lets go.

We replace cables as a pair, from $195, and check the drums (from $75 each) because a worn drum groove chews up a new cable quickly. If you live a block or two from the water, ask about stainless cable; we'll tell you whether it fits your door's drums and what it costs.

Door off its track after a storm or a bump

Doors usually come off track for one of three reasons: a car or trash can hit the door or the track, a cable broke and the door twisted, or strong wind pushed on a door that was partly open. Nor'easters off the Atlantic do the last one well.

How to tell: one or more rollers are outside the track, the door is tilted, or there is a visible kink in the track. Don't run the opener — it will keep pushing and can bend the panels. Putting a door back on track costs from $175; straightening a bent track from $125; a new track section from $195.

Rollers: why nylon is worth it near the beach

Older doors often have plain steel rollers. They rust, they get loud, and once the bearings seize they slide instead of rolling. Sealed nylon rollers run quieter and don't rust on the wheel. A single roller is $39; a full set of nylon rollers for a typical door is from $175. Most customers notice the difference the first time the door opens.

Hinges, brackets and bearing plates

Hinges crack along the center line, especially the ones that carry the top section. A broken hinge lets a panel bend every time the door rolls over the curve. Hinges are from $45. Bottom brackets, which hold the cable at each lower corner, are from $59 — and these need care, because they are under spring tension. Bearing plates at the ends of the spring bar are from $75.

Dented or water-damaged panels

A single dented panel can often be replaced without buying a whole door, from $250 per panel, if the maker still offers it. When the bottom section has sat in water — and many garages on the peninsula did during Hurricane Sandy — the steel can rust from the inside and the bottom bracket loses its grip. In that case we'll show you the damage and tell you honestly whether a panel or a new door makes more sense.

Bottom seals and weather stripping

Daylight under the door means wind-driven rain, leaves and sand get in too. A new bottom seal costs from $125 and full weather stripping around the frame from $225. It's one of the cheaper repairs we do, and on windy blocks near the beach it makes a noticeable difference.

What a tune-up includes

A tune-up, from $125, is a full check of the door: we lubricate hinges, rollers, bearings and springs; tighten loose hardware; check cables and drums for rust; test the balance; and test the opener's safety reverse. It is the easiest way to catch a fraying cable or a cracking spring before it fails.

Repair or replace?

Repair is almost always the better value when the door's panels are sound. Replacement starts to make sense when several panels are rusted through, the door is very old and parts are no longer made, or the cost of repairs approaches the price of a new single steel door, which starts at $1,550. We will tell you which side of that line your door is on.

Repair questions we hear most

Why did my garage door cable snap?

Usually rust or wear. Cables fray near the bottom bracket, where moisture collects, and a worn drum can cut into them. In salty air this happens sooner.

My door came off the track. What should I do?

Leave it where it is, unplug the opener and keep everyone clear. A door off its track can fall. Putting it back costs from $175.

Are nylon rollers worth the money?

For most homes, yes. Sealed nylon rollers are quieter and don't rust on the wheel. A full set costs from $175.

Can one dented panel be replaced?

Often, yes, if the door's maker still offers that panel. A panel costs from $250. If it's no longer made, we'll explain your options.

What is included in a tune-up?

Lubrication, tightening, a cable and drum check, a balance test and an opener safety-reverse test. A tune-up costs from $125.
